STARS students used ground-penetrating radar to peek underground during a geology activity led by UH Hilo Geology Professor Elizabeth “Lis” Gallant on July 17, 2024.
Our STARS alumni are shining bright after graduating our 8th annual Women’s STARS Program! Last month, we hosted 12 students from across the State of Hawaiʻi to help them discover the exciting world of STEM studies and careers. The cohort of young women embarked on an exciting week filled with space exploration, science career insights, stargazing, and engaging tours of observatories. Hands-on activities in engineering, coding, and robotics ignited their creativity and problem-solving skills.

STARS students learned how to build and program robots at STARBASE Hawaii on July 17, 2024.
“This program broadens horizons and puts into perspective what you can do, specifically in science and engineering,” said STARS student Summer Schindel in a Hawaiʻi Tribune-Herald article highlighting the program. “If you think you may like it, or want to do STEM in the future, this program is great.”
It was a memorable week for everyone involved and the students went home with smiles and a buzz of excitement. We appreciate and thank all of our partners and presenters who helped make the STARS program possible this year:
