(L-R) UH Hilo students Trinity Parascandola and Kamalani Poepoe

Congrats to our Lunar Vulcans! The team of UH Hilo students researching how Hawaiian canoe plants can support food security on the Moon claimed second prize last month in the Senior Team Technical Poster Award category for the 2024 NASA MINDS challenge. Their project focused on “Cultivating ‘uala effectively to reduce vegetation and equipment resupply missions to the lunar surface.”

Students Kamalani Poepoe, Trinity Parascandola, Jose Loera, and Maxwell Barr collaborated on the project with mentorship from Dr. Heather Kaluna of the UH Hilo Physics and Astronomy Department and Christian Andersen of PISCES. Their dedication and hard work payed off!
