In November PISCES partnered with NASA and the University of Hawaii at Hilo to conduct a groundbreaking research project to enable the human exploration of Mars. Called BASALT (Biologic Analog Simulation Associated with Lava Terrains), this project investigated the habitability of Martian-like terrains by exploring the rugged lava of Mauna Ulu on Hawaii Island, with the goal of better preparing people for a manned Mars mission to search for signs of life. The work was featured in the December issue of Kennedy Space Center’s Spaceport Magazine, highlighting the high-tech tools they field tested while gathering geologic and biology science data.
